Today’s challenge – from sarahsouthwest at dVerse poets pub – was to write a quadrille (44 words exactly) including the word sleep or a variant thereof.
ravenous for naps
such joy to sleep with you upon your chest
and feel your hand curved soft upon my breast
before subjected to the surgeon’s blade,
light-sabre.
………………. Beacon torch by which I’m laid
I love you now beyond the autoclave
especially when we dare to misbehave.

I trust that I might whisper it to myself as I prepare to go under anaesthetic in four weeks’ time.
May you have peace as you anticipate surgery, Kathy.

Oh, I felt this. I’ve had bilateral mastectomies – it was hard – but better than the alternative, I guess. Good luck with your surgery, I hope you recover quickly. This poem is so bittersweet, especially in context.

Thank you dear David.
You may read the connection with what I recently posted on your collaborative poetry project page. My poem “Dark Yellow” relates to my mum’s struggle with breast cancer in the 1980s.
I intend to ‘rise like a phoenix’ as one of my friends has exhorted me. I’ve got a few years or hopefully decades of poetising left in me!
With love and respect for your own journey,
Kathy
