Thanks to Punam at dVerse Poets’ Pub who invites us thus to celebrate a sibling in poetry:
for today’s Poetics I would like you to show some love to your sibling(s) through poetry. You are free to complain and rant too. If you are an only child, you can write about the sibling you always wanted, you can pay homage to the sibling you lost, you can write a thank you verse that you always wanted to but never found time to…the possibilities are endless. Share with us your thoughts on your sibling(s), let us be a part of your family through your verse.
Here is a celebration of one of my soul-friends, in whose summer-house (“sit-ooterie”) we often sit.
soul-sisters, sitting it oot (for Anne, written in her ‘sit-ooterie’) So much alike, so different: congested tight Agave plants; ‘Bishop of Llandaff’ dahlias; emotions witnessed in the Dance. So much alike, in parallel: the oystercatcher’s probing beak the crimson pang of dogwood stems our sentence-endings when we speak. So much alike, so “youngest child”, with insight wisdom ‘yond our years; masks, metaphors, and fairy tales; and making choices after tears. So much of likeness, difference: earthed hugs connect. Her fire, each tends, the air that dreams are made of, breathes; the river ‘neath the river, wends. So, noticing what each one owns and celebrating her – we’re friends. © Kathy Labrum McVittie 13 October 2017

This made me smile. love the mood you set here and the imagery, which makes your relationship so vivid and colorful. Beautiful poem.

Thank you for enjoying this poem, Miriam! Yes, there is a good measure of colour and vitality in our friendship. This week she was wearing a woolly the colour of happy mustard, and I was in lavender and French blue. In the sitooterie, drinking spicy tea!

Thank you! Yes, gratitude for a soul-sister whose garden refreshes and delights and provides a haven. We listen to one another and sometimes laugh like old drains too.

I really love the conclusion… I sometimes think that friends should be the pinnacle of all human relationships, going from lovers, aquaintances, collegues or siblings to friends.

Yes, and each friendship has it own uniqueness and gift.

Oh you are so lucky to have a soul-sister, Kathy! I love the way you write about your alikeness:
‘the oystercatcher’s probing beak
the crimson pang of dogwood stems
our sentence-endings when we speak’
and the ‘earthed hugs’. I do have a little of that with my other sister, the middle one. We’re still friends, laugh at the same things and like similar books.

Great way of putting it – ‘So much alike, in parallel:” – more alike than siblings for the parallel.

Siblings scribbled thanks for the chance.
My sisters
I think about my sisters all the time
Or do I mean several times each day.
My life I think, would not have been
The same without them in any way.
The age of sisters matters, as wise as they are
Life can be a huge trial for them, but when I ask,
How they are, their reply is almost always,
‘Oh I’am OK’. Even though I know it’s not true.
So I just leave it there…

Thank you John for sharing this. It is very poignant, and your sisters’ quiet dignity comes through. I feel sure that they are each, and differently, supported by your concern and kindness. Good wishes to you
